Finding My Why: The Foundation of What I Do
As I start this blog, I know I’ll be writing about the energy industry—sharing insights on cost reduction, sustainability, and resilience. But before diving into all that, I wanted to start with something more fundamental—something I was discussing just this week. This post is about finding your why because, at the core of everything we do, that’s what drives us forward.
We all know what we do. But if I asked you to explain why you do it in one sentence, could you? If not, maybe it’s time to find your why.
I’ll be honest—I haven’t always got this right. In the past, I’ve done things for the wrong reasons. But now, this is something I’m deeply passionate about. If you ever meet or speak with me, you’ll see that firsthand.
Simon Sinek’s concept of Find Your Why is built on the idea that each of us has an internal driver—the reason we get out of bed in the morning. Our why shapes the decisions we make, the work we choose, and the impact we aim to have.
Why Your Why Matters
Finding your why is crucial on both a personal and professional level. When your work aligns with your why, it becomes more meaningful and fulfilling. And when challenges arise—and they always do—your why is what keeps you moving forward.
For me, it all started with seeing how high utility costs can cripple organisations. I experienced this firsthand when I was responsible for an operation turning over around £8 million per week. The financial pressures frustrated me then, just as they do now. But I realised that with my experience and skills in the energy industry, I could make a difference.
That’s my why: to remove financial barriers so that leaders can sleep at night and focus on what matters most—whether that’s growing a business, spending time with loved ones, or fulfilling their mission.
But there’s more to it than that. It’s not just about cost reduction; it’s about sustainability. The way we use energy today has a direct impact on future generations. I want to help organizations not only save money but also make responsible choices that reduce their carbon footprint and protect the planet.
Because what’s the point of financial success if we don’t have a sustainable future to enjoy it in?
Discovering Your Why
Your why tends to surface in everything you do. If you look back at your experiences, you might see a common thread running through them.
For example, someone who has worked in different sectors might realize they’ve always been drawn to empowering others or solving complex problems. If your why isn’t immediately clear, start asking yourself deeper questions:
What do I do?
Why do I do it?
And why is that important?
And why is that important?
Or think about it another way:
If you could leave one lasting message for the world, what would it be?
If you had to work in a completely different field, what role would excite you?
Writing Your Why Statement
Once you’ve explored these questions, try putting your why into words. Here’s a simple format:
“I believe that… so I… I do…”
For me, it might look like this:
“I believe that financial and energy barriers shouldn’t stop organisations from thriving, and that sustainability is essential for future generations. So, I work to help businesses navigate these challenges, reduce costs, and lower their carbon footprint. I do this through energy audits, cost reduction strategies, and ongoing support.”
Living Your Why
Some people find their why quickly, while others take time to refine it. That’s okay. The closer you get, the more clarity you’ll have in your decisions and actions.
Finding your why might also reveal that you’ve drifted from it, leading you to make necessary changes—sometimes difficult ones. But in the long run, aligning with your why will always lead to a more purpose-driven life.
So next time you’re facing a big decision, meeting new people, or even thinking about how to approach your work—start with why.
